'This is not a game.' El Paso funeral homes beg people to take COVID-19 seriously

As El Pasoans continue to die from COVID-19 and funeral home employees console the families who have lost loved ones, Perches Funeral Home General Manager Jorge Ortiz wishes those who don't take the pandemic seriously could see what he sees.

“If I had the opportunity to invite them — who don't believe and think this is not real — to the funeral home, I would, so they can see what is happening and give them a different perspective of what they hear, what they see and what they believe,” Ortiz said. “It gives you a different perspective once you're in here working at a funeral home and talking to these family members who have lost someone.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has left more than 1,000 dead in El Paso and the number is growing. Perches Funeral Homes and Sunset Funeral Homes are among the many funeral homes in El Paso that had to increase the number of mortuary coolers to meet the seemingly endless number of bodies being brought to them.

All of Perches' locations — six in El Paso and one in Las Cruces — have increased capacity for holding bodies. A new location holds over 100 bodies. The others hold between 20 and 60 bodies, Ortiz said.

No, no, no. Don't congregate. Don't think that your tribal traditions will magically protect you. Because they won't, any more than that nonsense about vibrations will protect you.

Ignoring science isn't a good thing. Regardless of your traditions.

I'm so angry about this I could spit. I honestly want to respect and honor other people's beliefs, but sometimes it's very hard. Look up funerary traditions in Africa and you'll understand why Ebola is a problem there. No, don't take my word for it. Do a little research.
