Texas agencies are fighting release of documents related to power grid emergency
The massive failure of the states electricity grid during last month's severe winter weather caused extended blackouts that left millions of Texans in the cold and dark potentially contributing to multiple deaths and billions of dollars in property damage.
But government entities at the center of the calamity are withholding documents that could shed light on how it happened.
In addition, many private companies that generate, distribute or deliver electricity on the grid including Calpine Corp., Vistra Corp. and ExxonMobil have weighed in with legal briefs supporting efforts to keep documents that touch on their businesses secret.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the grid, is among the oversight agencies that have declined to release information, as is the Public Utility Commission and Gov. Greg Abbott's office. Locally, the Lower Colorado River Authority and municipally owned Austin Energy have balked at providing documents requested by the American-Statesman regarding the grid emergency.
