Gov. Greg Abbott discusses border security in El Paso; Samaniego calls strategy 'irrational'

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott stopped in El Paso to discuss border security efforts with the Texas Border Sheriffs Coalition on Monday morning, but some El Paso officials were wary of his strategy.

In attendance were dozens of sheriffs and Border Patrol agents, El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser and El Paso County Judge Ricardo Samaniego.

Abbott opened by voicing concern for property owners along the border, and how the border has changed from Mexican workers crossing back and forth to migrants coming from "Russia, China and Iran."

"Those are what's categorized as special interest issues that pose a unique potential threat to the United States of America," Abbott said to the crowd of about 60. "And then there's a long list of countries that some of you have never heard of before, some of which maybe are pronounced like Burkina Faso."
