Users fight over Brazos River water rights
Is this goodbye to the Brazos?
A half-century after John Graves penned the elegiac Goodbye to a River, the story of his canoe journey down the mighty river before a new round of dams was built, some say the Brazos is under threat again. This time, the quasi-public Brazos River Authority is asking for the rights to possibly every drop left in the river to meet future demands of a swelling population.
The request has run into an unlikely band of opponents, including farmers, landowners, environmentalists and the Dow Chemical Co,, which operates a giant complex near the mouth of the river that uses more water than many Texas cities.
I just do not want to see the Brazos River turn into a ditch, said Ed Lowe, who owns about 30 acres along the river in Hood County. Rivers are ancient entities that we should protect.
