Quick question on registering to vote. Is a Drivers license required?

Yes... I am joining Battleground Texas, and am working on getting ready to register folks. I thought that law had been turned over.

I applied online at https://webservices.sos.state.tx.us/vrapp/index.asp when I moved to Brenham last year. Fill out the form, print and mail it to the address shown.

I believe that you can also obtain hard copy versions from the Secretary of State office.

You don't need to show a driver's license to register to vote in Texas. You do need to provide your Texas driver's license number (or state ID number if you have one of those instead of a DL.) If you don't have either of those numbers, you can provide the last four digits of your social security number.

We asked the head of elections in Fort Bend County back before the DOJ blocked the Texas voter id law (SB 14) and he was clear that you can register to vote without id and deputy voter registers were not to ask for ID.

I have talked to some people at the State Party and there is a strong belief that the GOP will do something to make voting harder and to make voter registration more difficult. If Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is ruled to be unconstitutional, you can expect some additional restrictions on both voting and voter registration.

BTW, I heard that some GOP voter registrars were asking to see id but no one did anything to them. I would not be surprised to see the Texas GOP add a requirement that one shows a proper form of voter id to the voter registration requirements.

The law in Texas has been for some time that a first time voter who registered and does not provide a social security number or TDL number will have to provide some form of ID when they vote for the first time. This law is not related to the Texas voter id law (SB 14) and such identification can include a bill or piece of official mail with the voter's name and address on it. If Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is deemed to be unconstitutional, then the GOP will require a govt. issued id in order to vote.
