House approves drug tests for jobless benefits

The Texas House tentatively approved a bill Tuesday night to require drug screens, and possible drug tests, for some Texans who apply for unemployment benefits.

The drug screen, a questionnaire adopted by the Texas Workforce Commission, would be given to first-time applicants for jobless benefits who were required to take a pre-employment drug test — workers in the aviation, trucking and hazardous materials industries, for example, said Rep. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe.

If the screen pointed to potential drug use, the applicant would have to pass a drug test to receive benefits, Creighton said.

Under Senate Bill 21, applicants who fail a drug test could receive benefits if they enter a treatment program or pass a second test administered after four weeks.

And the benefit to that is those drugs will be too new to show up on the drug-abuse-testing the state would want to do

that might seem plausible to as many people as possible to deny giving any money to anyone who is not on the wealthy side of the tracks because they should live like subsistence slaves... period.

It really does not matter what they come-up with, but the war on SOME drugs have been a very powerful and useful tool for denying people what they need and continuing the rule of the oligarchs. It is convenience at its best, but it does work well and the people will always buy into the anti-(some)drug propaganda that then comes back to bite them in the end, one way or another.

Of course, the insanity that ensues from a drug war for fun and profit, (disguised as a benefit and a protection for that symbolic icon, "the children&quot then helps feed the abysmal mouth of Big Phrama because more and more people need to be on SOMETHING to get through this crazy mess of being screwed by the people who tell you they are making laws for your protection while they check with their benefactors to see if that next big check cleared and then they go do some stock trading in private prisons and the like to cash in via predatory capitalism.

Gotta' love America: Land of the peed, (in a cup).

Your suffering and incarceration are wealth, so stop complaining already and make the sacrifice for those who REALLY matter.

If they're not on anti-psychotics, no more being a state legislator. I think it's pretty obvious that many of them are off their much-needed meds.

House Democrats killed a bill Tuesday night that would have required welfare recipients to undergo drug screenings and potential drug tests to receive benefits.

By raising five points of order, filing amendments and drawing out debate, Democrats chewed up more than two hours of precious time on a night when all Senate-approved bills would die without an initial vote before midnight.

“We believe, simply, that this bill is wrong,” said Rep. Chris Turner, D-Grand Prairie. “This bill singles out some of the least fortunate in our state for what essentially is a stigmatizing test.”

Senate Bill 11 died when midnight struck, as did about 50 Senate bills behind it.
