Community responds to heartbroken, homeless mother of three

Central Virginians responded immediately after learning of Nicole Thweatt’s story. The mother of three was abruptly removed from temporary housing and lost all of her belongings shortly after being hospitalized for an emergency caesarean section.

While her newborn is in the NICU and her other two children were staying with friends, 8News spoke to Thweatt Monday night outside of the car she has been sleeping in.

Messages on social media for the single mother read, “we would love to help the young lady and her family,” “I’d like to help Nicole…,” “Thank you for sharing so that others can lend a hand,” “praying for your family and God’s on your side.”

Monday night, Thweatt described returning to the Days Inn Hotel on Midlothian Turnpike last Friday after the emergency c-section at the hospital. When she approached the room’s front door–where her 11 and 7-year-old children were also living through a temporary housing program with Commonwealth Catholic Charities–a shocking discovery: another family had moved in, and her belongings were “disposed of” according to the non-profit.

4. We don't by any means or measure. Not at all.

I am middle class, have a great job with employer provided healthcare. It is inadequate - a crummy, rationed system with financially crippling copays, and don't even talk about dental care. This year I actually incurred a bit of health care debt, even though I had saved up the copay in anticipation of a surgery my wife needed.

That was four large, that crippling copay, and basically stripped us. But she needed hearing aids, too, and I had to take out a loan for that. Then I dropped a crown, and that was another $600, plus a visit to the periodontist, which will cost $12 large over the next two years or so.

You know what would make me feel like a rich man? Being able to get my teeth fixed all at once, and not having to worry about being wheeled through accounting before getting any healthcare 'services.' We should NOT have to arrange financing for healthcare, and my crappy HMO went up 21% this year. 21%.

Yet, Bernardo, I am thankful, because look at the horror of what Nicole is going through, and will be going through for the rest of her life. The NICU can cost seven figures, and they WILL come after her. So she might go into a shelter, find a job, and struggle to get back on her feet, only to face collectors and wage garnishment.

This is truly a 'kick 'em while they are down' society, and if you are down, it is hard, hard, hard to pull yourself back up out of it.

8. They probably won't come after her.

I used to work for a not for profit health care system and they would never go after someone like Nicole. First of all, it's pointless. She'll never be able to pay. They would get what they could from Medicaid and write the rest off.

2. This is the brutality of capitalism. We have been operating under

the doctrine of profits over people for too long.

We need to begin organizing ourselves around human need rather than allowing our system to pad the pockets of a few billionaire parasites while people like Nicole Thweatt suffer under the violence of grinding, unrelenting poverty.

7. Don't be angry at Days Inn.

They're an innocent bystander. It's the "charity" that did this.

"A representative with Commonwealth Catholic Charities, who helps house people without homes like Thweatt at the hotel, said they “disposed of” the belongings."

They didn't even try to contact her before they kicked her out of the program and threw away her stuff. They didn't specifically say why, since they're not talking to the press, but since they keep reiterating their "rules," presumably it was for non-compliance because she left the room. If they had tried to contact her they would have known it was to have an emergency caesarean to give premature birth. But they didn't. I guess they weren't feeling charitable. Commonwealth Catholic Charities are the villains in this story.
