Getting good grades as an athlete at Virginia Tech will soon pay off — literally. ... Virginia Tech said Thursday it plans to financially reward student athletes on their academic progress in the wake of last June’s U.S. Supreme Court decision in Alston vs. NCAA.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this financial incentive for our student athletes to make the type of academic progress that will benefit them for years to come after graduation,” Athletic Director Whit Babcock said in a statement.

“We are currently finalizing our criteria for this program and plan to roll out the details to student athletes, their families and our coaching staffs this summer.”

According to NCAA rules put in place after the Supreme Court ruling, student athletes can get paid up to $5,980 a year for their academic performance. ... The rewards package is expected to start in the fall. ... College athletes can also get paid from their Name, Image and Likeness deals.

basically work full time jobs for the school. They are routinely told "we own you." by the coaches. Some states like Georgia provide tuition free school if you keep a high enough GPA. They also risk permanent damage by playing. A knee injury will impact you the rest of your life and multiple concussions can affect you later. I think women suffer the most concussions playing soccer. Would you risk your mind and body for this?

Just enroll and take classes like the rest of the student body does.

They work 50 hours a week in sports. They risk their physical health and brains for the rest of their lives. They work every Saturday and they work off season. They have to participate in spring football. Does any other student even come close to that dedication of time? You are like a lot of people in that you are jealous of athletes. The only reason you didn't play is because you were eliminated at an early age.
