Two teenage girls died and three other people were injured in a two-car crash involving pedestrians late Tuesday morning in Oakton, Virginia. ... The crash happened around 11:45 a.m. at the intersection of Blake Lane and Five Oaks Road, Fairfax County police said Tuesday afternoon.

According to Maj. Eli Cory, a police spokesman, a white BMW speeding southbound on Blake collided with a Toyota 4Runner that was turning left onto Five Oaks. ... “The white BMW was ricocheted off the side of the road, hit the three pedestrians, hit a pole on the side of the road and finally came to a rest down the street,” Cory said.

Police say three girls on foot — who were Oakton High School students — suffered life-threatening injuries. Hours later Tuesday afternoon, Fairfax police said two had died at the hospital.

The driver of that speeding BMW, Cory said, was a juvenile, and two passengers in the BMW fled the scene. ... “Technically, anyone in the car has to stay and report the accident to the police,” he said. “You know, we’re going to follow up on that to see why they fled. And obviously they weren’t in control of the vehicle, but they are still required by law.”

Update at 5:35 p.m. — Two of the three teenage pedestrians that were struck in a crash in Oakton this morning have died from their injuries, Fairfax County Police said. The three pedestrians that were struck were Oakton High School students, police said.

Earlier: Five juveniles were transported to the hospital this afternoon (Tuesday) after a car crashed into an SUV, then ricocheted into a group of three teenage pedestrians and a utility pole in Oakton, Fairfax County police said.

The three pedestrians have life-threatening injuries and the driver and front passenger of the car were transported with non-life-threatening injuries, Maj. Eli Cory said at a press conference. Rear passengers in the car — a white BMW — fled the scene, he said.

Just before noon, the BMW was traveling southbound on Blake Lane while a green Toyota 4Runner was traveling northbound. The 4Runner waited for the three teens to cross the roadway and then started to turn onto Five Oaks Road.

“The BMW, which we believe was traveling at a very high rate of speed, made impact with the Toyota on the front driver’s side of the vehicle, that caused the initial part of the crash to occur,” Cory said.

A driver was convicted for a 2022 crash that killed two teen girls who were walking home from Oakton High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. ... Usman Shahid, who was 18 at the time of the crash, was found guilty Wednesday of two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Victims' family members burst into tears as the verdict came down, while Shahid showed little emotion. ... “I feel like I can finally breathe again. We are beginning to get justice,” the mother of one victim told News4 partner Telemundo 44 in Spanish. ... The judge ordered Shahid to be jailed immediately, over his attorney’s objections.

Prosecutors said Shahid was driving a BMW and accelerated to 81 mph in a 35 mph zone on Blake Lane just before noon on June 7, 2022. It was an early release school day near the end of the school year. He saw that a traffic light was yellow, floored it and slammed into a Toyota 4Runner whose driver had been turning left. Police testified that the force of the crash sent Shahid’s BMW off the road and onto the sidewalk, where he hit three teen girls.

Shahid, who had three friends in the car and was driving on a learner’s permit, then plowed through a mailbox, utility box and power pole. ... One passenger testified that in the moments after the crash, Shahid said, “I think I killed three girls.” ... Two of the crash victims died of their injuries and the third was seriously hurt. ... A resident of the area described a heartbreaking scene after the crash, with a woman performing CPR on one victim. He said Shahid was worried about how his father would react to the crash.

FAIRFAX, VA — The sentencing hearing in the manslaughter case of two Oakton High School students killed in a June 7, 2022, crash abruptly stopped Thursday morning after a member of the courtroom audience collapsed during the testimony of one of the victim’s mothers.

A jury convicted Usman Shahid on two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal crash that took the lives of Ada Gabriela Martinez Nolasco and Leeann Yan.

A Patch reporter was in the courtroom for the hearing Thursday, with prosecutor Jenna Sands calling on family members of the two victims to testify.

During testimony by Martinez Nolasco’s mother, a woman in the courtroom audience collapsed and was taken out of the courtroom by other attendees.

After a recess, Circuit Court Judge Randy Bellows met with the prosecutor and defense team, and sent the jury to lunch until 1 p.m.
