Washington County, Va. School Board to hold special election for vacant seat

ABINGDON, Va. (WJHL) — The Washington County Circuit Court will hold a special election to fill the vacant Washington County School Board Monroe District seat left by Lee Brannon’s resignation, who was appointed to the county’s board of supervisors.

The election will coincide with the general election on Nov. 3. Interested candidates must file all candidate qualification documents with the General Registrar of Washington County, Virginia, by 5 p.m. on August 14, 2026. The paperwork may be picked up at the Registrar’s office or accessed here.

Candidates for office must be registered voters residing in the local election district. The seat serves District D (Monroe District), which includes the Glade Spring and Meadowview precincts of Washington County, Virginia.

The winner of the special election will complete the current unexpired term, which ends on Dec. 31, 2027. Interested candidates can contact the Office of the General Registrar at (276) 676-6227 for any questions.
