Six people were hospitalized Thursday after a large section of a tree toppled and smashed into a farmers market at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Just before 4 p.m., the sheared limbs fell across both lanes of Hospital Drive and struck several tents set up near the Barringer Wing of the Medical Center, university police Lt. Melissa Fielding said.
It was unknown at press time whether the six people injured were vendors or patrons. The market was set up for UVa employees, authorities said. Although their injuries ranged from minor to serious, no one suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.
Work to clear the debris began at about 6 p.m. Thursday. ... Charlottesville Fire Chief Charles Werner said the split apparently was caused by rotting wood.
I know the location exactly. If I had a nickel for every time I've walked through that location, ... well, I'd have a lot of nickels.
