The Virginia Department of Health has confirmed that the enterovirus D68 is circulating in the eastern region of the state, which includes Hampton Roads.
State health officials also have confirmed cases of the respiratory ailment in Northern Virginia. The first cases of enterovirus D68 in the commonwealth were in Richmond, confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in September.
The respiratory virus has sickened children in 43 states and the District of Columbia. The virus can have a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, but has hit children with asthma and other underlying conditions hardest.
Most enterovirus cases don't need inpatient treatment, but this particular strain has hospitalized hundreds of children across the country. Late last week, New Jersey health officials reported that the September death of a 4-year-old boy in that state was due to the D68 strain. There also have been reports of paralysis associated with some cases.
