Two targeted Seattle City Council candidates on verge of passing 50%

Seattle City Council incumbent Lisa Herbold and candidate Tammy Morales were targeted by a group called People for Seattle and flayed with hit piece mailings during the just-concluded primary election.

They've apparently been made stronger for the experience. Both are on the verge of passing 50% of the vote as King County Elections updates its vote totals.
Herbold is at 49.47% in District 1 (West Seattle, South Park) with a lead of more than 16 points over business-backed challenger attorney Philip Tavel. It's a cushion for Herbold, who won her seat in 2015 by fewer than 100 votes.

In District 2 (Southeast Seattle), Morales was hit with negative mailings and described as "another socialist" by Mayor Jenny Durkan, who boosted candidate Mark Solomon. Solomon is a crime prevention coordinator with the Seattle Police Department.

With Thursday's count, Morales had 49.56% of the vote, more than twice the 23.41 total for Solomon. The two will face each other again in November. Morales is a community organizer with the Rainier Beach Action Coalition.

Controversial incumbent Council Member Kshama Sawant is in deep political trouble, but has seen her vote total grow modestly to 35.04% of the vote, a 13 point lead over November opponent Egan Orion. Orion is a longtime LGBTQ activist credited with saving Pride Week events on Capitol Hill.

35% doesn't sound very good for an incumbent.

She has been a lightning rod and has been targeted by much of the establishment. It’s a wonder she is doing as well as 35%.

I’m kinda disappointed in the business interests dominance in the council primary elections.
