5 injured after dump truck careens down street in Pioneer Square, smashes into a Subway

A dump truck crashed Monday morning into the entrance of a Subway sandwich shop in Pioneer Square, hitting multiple cars and pedestrians.

Five people were injured and four of them were transported to Harborview Medical Center. A 25-year-old woman was in serious condition as of 11:24 a.m. And three men ages 44, 51 and 73 were all in satisfactory condition, Harborview spokeswoman Barbara Clements said in an email.

Medics and police responded to the scene along James Street and at the Subway on Yesler Way at about 9:50 a.m. after reports of several people being hit by a careening dump truck.

The truck reportedly suffered a "catastrophic mechanical failure" as the driver was heading westbound on James Street, Seattle Police Department Det. Patrick Michaud said in a statement. It hit a pedestrian at the intersection of Second Avenue and James Street.

The driver tried to steer the runaway truck through traffic but hit three vehicles on James Street before it smashed into the entrance of a Subway. One employee was inside and transported to Harborview.

On a slight tangent, do drivers have to turn their wheels into the curb while parked on the hilly streets, like they do
in San Francisco???

When I was driving a company rig we were also required to use wheel chocks when parking.
