Fearing violence, state of Washington cancels wolf meetings

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The state of Washington has canceled a series of wolf-related meetings, saying it fears they might be accompanied by violence.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced the cancellations at a Wolf Advisory Group meeting on Tuesday.

The department is planning for a time when wolves are no longer a protected species, and public input is necessary for that process.

But the agency says it cannot assure the safety of the public or its staff if the meetings are held.

The return of wolves to the state from surrounding areas in 2008 has led to numerous conflicts between the animals and livestock producers, especially in northeastern Washington state. Agency officials told The Spokesman-Review they started to see Facebook posts threatening violence.

Northeast Washington (north of Spokane) is where a lot of white supremacist's have come from.

would have to have hunts to thin them out occasionally and have to compensate ranchers for some livestock. I don't see it as a huge deal.

One business owner in Kendrick, ID that is no lefty told me those elk are just gonna have to change their ways. That's the big issue in my area, that the wolves are hurting the elk hunting. The elk can't just hang out where the feed is best if that makes them easier pray for the wolves. It was easier on the human hunters too. Now they all have to try harder and spend more money to get their elk.

There is also an army of fat old guys who's day of packing out an elk should have ended long ago. They never could afford a guided trip with pack horses and all that, and used to get as close as they could and hunt on foot. Now they all have four wheelers. I'd say that has about as big an impact on the hunting as the wolves.

We have ranchers that intentionally place their cattle in areas where wolf packs inhabit. Then when one cow is killed they demand the pack be exterminated. The WFA complies and kills as many of the pack as possible. Most Washingtonian ‘s oppose this tactic so the right wingers are using violence to get their way
