Washington Judge Rules Value Village Misled Shoppers
SEATTLE, WA A King County judge ruled Friday that Value Village deceived shoppers into thinking the company was a charity of non-profit enterprise. According to the Attorney General's office, TVI, Value Village's parent company, earned $1 billion in annual revenue and knew its advertising suggested proceeds would benefit charities.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a consumer protection lawsuit after receiving several complaints from shoppers who felt misled. Ferguson said ads at one store said donations and purchases helped support local programs and services, but they never received any money. In one case, Value Village paid a foundation in Spokane a monthly fee to use their name and logo in promotional materials.
A judge will determine monetary penalties the company may owe at a hearing next spring. Value Village's last Seattle location will close in mid-November, the Seattle Times reported Thursday.
