Microsoft's Brad Smith: Ultra-high-speed rail a 'fundamental opportunity for the region'

Most people wouldn’t consider Microsoft a transportation company.

“No, but we all have to get around, it turns out,” Microsoft President Brad Smith said.

Under his leadership, the company recently invested in a study to determine necessary financing and governance for a potential ultra-high-speed rail system from Vancouver to Seattle to Portland.

Smith reinvigorated the idea of the Cascadia Corridor, Challenge Seattle CEO and former Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire said. The idea is to connect the Cascadia region’s three major cities via high-speed rail with stops in between to spread economic and population growth.

“It was his idea: Let's have a more inclusive economy,” Gregoire said. “Let's bring that opportunity, that educational opportunity and that job opportunity to everybody in the community. And you can't necessarily accomplish that sitting in a large metropolitan city like Seattle. ... So Brad was looking big-picture, how do we really succeed as a small region and then as a megaregion.”

I believe Boeing did build a light rail vehicle back in the day. A high speed train though is a different beast.
