Falling in line with national trend, Seattle sees more and more high-rise buildings
More and more high-rise buildings are popping up in Seattle as the city falls in line with the national trend of building up.
A new study by RentCafe -- which analyzed how the number of high-rise, mid-rise and low-rise apartments buildings has changed since 1990 -- shows Seattle ranks fourth among the cities that have had the most new high-rise apartment buildings constructed over the past decade.
The report found in Seattle, about 9% of apartment buildings completed between 2010 and 2018 were high-rise buildings and about three-quarters of the buildings completed were mid-rise buildings. From 2000 to 2009, just 4% of the apartment buildings completed in Seattle were high-rise buildings.
The percentage of low-rise buildings -- meaning buildings that are four floors of less -- being built has dropped consistently in Seattle since 1990. Between 1990 and 1999, low-rise buildings accounted for 46% of apartment buildings completed. From 2000 to 2009, low-rise buildings accounted for just 27% of the apartment buildings completed, and between 2010 and 2018, that number dropped to just 19%.
