20-acre waterfront park to replace viaduct space in 2024

SEATTLE — It’s been a year since the iconic Alaskan Way Viaduct closed for good.

Since the demolition of the elevated highway began, there have been a lot of growing pains along the waterfront. Now the area will be transformed into a 20-acre park featuring an overlook wall and public space.

The entire park is expected to open in 2024. The first part of the project will be at Pier 62, which is expected to open this spring.

“What’s so critical about it, when you think about Seattle central shoreline, it’s where our city started. It’s so much of our identity,” said Heidi Hughes with Friends of Waterfront Seattle. “And for a longtime we had this herking double decker highway that really cut off [our] city."
