Over 200 drivers stranded overnight by US 2 closure after trees fall across highway

SKYKOMISH, Wash. -- Over 200 drivers became unexpectedly stranded for hours along U.S. 2 Sunday night after several tree and power line falls closed the highway.

"Trees are continuing to fall and it is too dangerous for our crews to clear this area or let travelers through until they can safely assess conditions," WSDOT officials tweeted.

The 15-mile closure stretched from Gold Bar in the west to Skykomish in the east and lasted into Monday morning. That left several drivers heading west trapped with few options.

"It was an extremely long night up on Highway 2," said Trooper Heather Axtman.

Drivers could either try to make their way into the town of Skykomish or turn around and head back east across Stevens Pass into Leavenworth, officials said.
