Kirkland students' petition urges school district to cancel classes amid coronavirus concerns

Students in Kirkland want to know why their district is not canceling classes, as others are. They started a petition, which had more than 17,000 signatures on Wednesday, urging the Lake Washington School District to close temporarily.

“I was like, wow, people really do care about this, and they don't just want to get out of school,” said Michael Finlayson, an 8th grader at Kamiakin Middle School, who started the petition.

“We do not write this petition to get out of our schoolwork,” the petition reads. “We expect our teacher to provide us with assignments at home, and we resolve to work hard to complete those assignments while school is closed.”

Finlayson said he and his classmates are concerned they might spread the virus and carry it home to family members, some of whom are in fragile health.

they are making up all that missed time come June or July.

Remind me again how many thousands of Americans have gotten sick with this so far?

students who go on vacation for just a few days get a "contract" where the teacher assigns the work for the student to complete and submit upon return and get credit for it. I have written contracts for over a month off. It is routine. The district still gets the money from the state and the kids don't miss school and now with computers it is very easy to do. What's the problem?

I know that if I were still teaching I would go out on COBRA until this all is under control since I got sick 90% of the school year and is the reason I had to stop teaching...school left me with a compromised immune system.

to start a petition? Should area health dept or school supers decide to cliose schools?

OTOH, what happens when kids are out of school? Parents have to find child care for younger ones. Older ones will hang out together in public or in each others' homes.

Which is worse from a health perspective?
