Seattle Mariners' 2020 season postponed in wake of COVID-19
Like the Sounders, the Seattle Mariners have now had their upcoming season halted by the evolving novel coronavirus pandemic.
Major League Baseball announced Thursday that it will delay its 2020 regular season by at least two weeks and all spring training games are cancelled as of 1 p.m. Pacific.
Before the news, the Mariners had released a statement Wednesday stating that their four-game series against the Texas Rangers to start 2020 was being relocated from T-Mobile Park, likely moving it outside of Seattle. The top options at that time to move forward, according to club CEO John Stanton, was to play regular-season games in Arizona (where spring training is held) or have its seven home games to start the year -- the first four against the Rangers, the last three against the Twins -- on the road.
With the MLB now suspended temporarily, it joins other professional sports leagues and prominent college sports tournaments across the country in suspending or postponing operations. The MLS suspended its season earlier Thursday for at least 30 days in wake of COVID-19, forcing the Sounders to halt team operations.
