1. Senator Murray needs interns in WA and DC

Senator Murray is looking for legislative and press interns in D.C. and constituent advocacy interns in the Seattle, Spokane and Vancouver state offices. Applicants should be eager to learn more about the legislativeprocess, and want to be part of a hardworking team,dedicated to serving the citizens of Washington state.

Qualifications

Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students who have completed at least one year of college. Additionally, upperclassmen and students withstrong ties to the state of Washington will be given preference in the application process. Interns should be interested in government and have excellent writing and research skills, a positive attitude anda willingness to complete tasks as assigned. Legislative interns must be willing to work at a variety of activities, and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. For press interns, a communications or journalism background is preferred.

Program Outline

In order to best accommodate all applicants, internship sessions are scheduled both on academic quarters and semesters (i.e., an intern could work either a semester or quarter internship, based on their academic institution’s credit system). Internships are unpaid but are available for school credit if approved by a college/university. We encourage Washington, DC interns to work full time (40 hours/week), though this is not a requirement. In our state offices, internships are available primarily on a part-time basis (10-15 hours/week).

2. Volunteer with Cascade Bicycle Alliance

You're invited to join us for our Volunteer Work Party this Thursday, January 3, from 1-4pm, in our office located at 314 First Avenue South. Book Publicist: Assist in distributing CAGJ’s new book to book-stores and libraries throughout the country, help organize readings in WA state, and generally assist in getting the word out about CAGJ’s new book, the 2nd edition of Our Food, Our Right: Recipes for Food Justice.

Newsletter Editor: Solicit newsletter items from Steering Committee, compile Community Calendar, and work with Director to format online e-newsletter on the last day of every month. 4 – 8 hours per month.
Office Volunteer: Assist Director with data-entry and other current, ongoing organizing tasks. A regular data-entry volunteer is really needed a few hours per week.

Food Justice Project: Organize for a fairer, healthier food system by joining the Food Justice Project
CAGJ's Food Justice Project is gearing up for a great 2013 - and needs more people to help make our work happen. Volunteers are needed to coordinate 2013's Teach-Outs, get involved with Educate for Action workshops, & to move forward our Solidarity Campaigns. At the next FJP meeting, we’ll be discussing our current Solidarity Campaigns and what initiatives we should ally with in 2013 to mobilize our members and the public. Interesting Science Idea / Opportunity
I had talked to you earlier about my work opening a Bio-Hackerspace in Seattle. We decided to use a
crowd-sourcing technique, and have a project running right now through Microryza
(https://www.microryza.com/projects/seattle-biohacker-space).

I was wondering if it would be possible to send it out the AWIS members? Even if they aren't interested in
donating, I think they could be interested in participating in a space like this, or referring others. We really
want it to be a community space, with all levels of background in science. We love the AWIS model of
mentorship, and we're trying to work that into the space.

8. Intern for Supporting Local Economies Everywhere

INTERN THIS SUMMER FOR SLEE!

This year's Strenghtening Local Economies Everywhere (SLEE) dinner is later than usual, and takes place Saturday, September 7. Which means... SLEE needs SUMMER INTERNS! If you are a student or otherwise looking for an opportunity to get some organizing and fundraising experience, as well as to get more involved with CAGJ and Seattle's food justice movement, contact Jasmine!

Or come to the next SLEE meeting. We still need talented interns and volunteers for the following roles:

Publicity Coordinator: Coordinate a group of volunteers to create promotional materials and conduct outreach to our co-sponsors to publicize the event. 6-8 hours/month.

Logistics Coordinator: Responsible for making sure all the physical and technical pieces of making our delicious dinner are in place. Coordinating equipment, supplies, delivery, set-up, etc. will all be part of the package. Talented (and organized) jugglers wanted! Starts in summer. Heaviest workload August until dinner.

Video Editor: Help design a smashing short video to introduce CAGJ's work over the years at the SLEE Dinner, and create a resource for us that will be invaluable for years to come! Food & Farm Outreach: Contact the many farmers, fisherfolks, creameries, wineries, breweries & others who support CAGJ with their amazing goods to see if they can help out this year.

Co-Sponsor Outreach: Contact businesses and nonprofits to ask for their assistance promoting our event.

Dessert Auction Outreach: Solicit 40 yummylicious desserts for the dessert auction that is always a big hit during SLEE. Starts in July.

Food Service Coordinator: Calling all waiters! Do you have food service experience and can’t wait to use it for an incredibly worthy cause? We need someone to coordinate all our volunteer servers for the night of our dinner, which also requires doing an orientation with them within 2 weeks prior to the event. Food Justice Project Internships

The Food Justice Project coordinates research, organizes monthly Teach-Outs, work-parties and visits to local farms and other key food sites, coordinates Educate for Action workshops on food politics, organizes events and actions around our Solidarity Campaigns aimed at building the movement for food justice and sovereignty. We also work to get our great new publication out into the world, the 2nd edition of “Our Food, Our Right: Recipes for Food Justice”.

Interns work with a team of CAGJ activists and directly with the two project co-chairs (who are also volunteers). Some office hours may be required, and the ability to work well independently and remotely will also be very important. In general, the CAGJ work environment is casual and friendly, but expects accountability and dependability from its volunteers to get things done! CAGJ is a volunteer run organization with one full-time staff.

Interns play critical roles within and outside of the organization. City Fruit is currently looking for volunteers interested in harvesting fruit in Phinney Ridge, West Seattle, and SE Seattle neighborhoods. The most common types of fruits you'll be harvesting are apples, pears, and plums. As a way of saying thanks, volunteers will get to bring some fruit home. 11. Northwest Farm Bill Action Group needs steering committee members (Seattle)

GET INVOLVED: Northwest Farm Bill Action Group seeks 2-3 additional members to join our Steering Committee. The Northwest Farm Bill Action Group (NWFBAG) is a group of community members who advocate for a more healthy, sustainable, and equitable food system and federal Farm Bill. We also provide education about the Farm Bill and the food systems it impacts in order to build capacity to advocate for change. Our volunteer Steering Committee oversees the group's work and is a great way to become a leader in the good food movement in Seattle. Responsibilities: 1x/month meetings,1x/week (avg) email communication, 1x/quarter event, 1x/quarter general meeting, Attend a Farm Bill 101 workshop and a Train-the-Trainer workshop, and Conduct outreach for NWFBAG as needed. Desired skills: web design and programming, social media, research/policy analysis, workshop facilitation and/or teaching skills. We are specifically interested in broadening the diversity of our steering committee. We encourage people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, incomes, and abilities to apply. 12. Help count bicyclists and pedestrians in your community!

How do we gauge the number of people biking and walking to work in Washington? We count them.

Washington State DOT and Cascade Bicycle Club are getting ready to conduct the sixth annual bicycle and pedestrian count, and volunteers are needed all across the state to help tally the numbers. The count will occur October 1 -3 in communities throughout our state. According to WSDOT, about 400 volunteers counted nearly 60,000 bicyclists and pedestrians during the three-day survey in 2012.

Counts will be conducted in at least 38 Washington communities including: Bainbridge Island, Bellevue, Bellingham, Bothell, Bremerton, Burien, Ellensburg, Everett, Federal Way, Ferndale, Gig Harbor, Issaquah, Kelso, Kent, Kirkland, Lake Forest Park, Lakewood, Longview, Lynden, Mercer Island, Milton, Mountlake Terrace, Oak Harbor, Olympia, Orting, Parkland, Puyallup, Redmond, Renton, Richland, Seattle, Shoreline, Spokane, Spokane Valley, Tacoma, Tukwila, University Place, Vancouver, Vashon Island, Walla Walla, Wenatchee, and Yakima.

14. GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science) Program Is Seeking Mentors

The GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science) program is seeking mentors to volunteer at their two program sites (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and South Seattle Community College). A mentor's time commitment is one evening a month from November through June. Please see below or our website. for a more detailed description of our GEMS program. GEMS is a science enrichment program for 7th and 8th grade girls currently attending a Seattle Public Middle School. The goal of the program is to encourage girls to maintain and broaden their interest in STEM subjects by providing mentoring, hands-on activities, field
trips, and information pertaining to a variety of scientific fields. The program is free for students and is funded by the Seattle Chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS).

GEMS meets one evening per month and hosts various field trips throughout the school year. There are two locations: one at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in South Lake Union, and one at South Seattle Community College in West Seattle.
