Seattle Sounders' 2020 season suspended additional 8 weeks due to coronavirus
The Seattle Sounders have their matches for the next eight weeks suspended in light of Major League Soccers announcement Thursday of an extended hiatus due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
After initially suspending the season for just 30 days, the MLS said Thursday that the new targeted return date is May 10. The decision was made in accordance with the CDCs recommendation to postpone all events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.
MLS remains focused on playing the entire 2020 season and is evaluating all options, including pushing back the end of the season and playing the MLS Cub in December, as the league did prior to the 2019 season, a league statement read. The league is also identifying other available dates. Throughout this process, MLS will continue to prioritize the safety of fans, players, employees and partners and to coordinate with federal and local public health authorities as well as other sporting organizations.
Added the Sounders: The Seattle Sounders FC remains supportive of these efforts in the fight against COVID-19.
