Second patient has coronavirus at psychiatric hospital

SEATTLE (AP) — A second patient at Washington state's largest psychiatric hospital has tested positive for the new coronavirus.

The Western State Hospital patient was on a different ward than the one who tested positive last week, officials with the state Department of Health and Human Services said in a release Saturday. Both patients were being treated at a Pierce County hospital.

Washington state leads the nation in coronavirus deaths with at least 94 fatalities and almost 1,800 positive cases.

Officials also reported last week that a hospital employee had the disease and was recovering at home.

Psych patients spend a lot of time together in close quarters. In groups through out the day, eating meals together, or just hanging out in the day room. Many also have underlying health conditions. People with mental health issues tend not to take care of their physical health. Many have co-morbid health conditions. Saw lots of COPD, HTN, Diabetes, Cirrhosis, Hep C.
If this hospital has a geriatric unit, like the hospital I worked in, that might be really devastating.

She's a substance abuse counselor, and starting a new job next week at the county jail, working with women prisoners. She's unconcerned. I'm also wondering how concerned I should be for being at her place once a week or more.
