Monroe inmate first to be diagnosed with COVID-19 inside state prison

MONROE, Wash. -- An inmate housed at the Monroe minimum security facility has become the first prisoner to test positive for COVID-19 inside a state prison, the Washington Department of Corrections announced Sunday.

The man was presenting symptoms Sunday morning and was taken to a local hospital for an exam, where he would eventually test positive for the coronavirus, officials said.

The prisoner was brought back to the prison and placed in an isolation unit inside a single cell, where he will be treated for the virus.

The housing unit where the prisoner had been staying had 119 members and all have been placed in quarantine with no movement allowed in or out, according to officials.
