Inslee calls for more WA food bank donations; estimated $12M more needed to meet demand amid virus
Gov. Jay Inslee is calling for more Washington residents and corporations to donate to a new relief fund to help food banks across the state meet the growing need during the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Officials are estimating about $12 million more will be needed to serve what is expected to be more than one million people who will be in need of food assistance during this crisis.
I am very grateful to those who have stepped up to help their neighbors put food on the table during this unprecedented crisis, Inslee said in a statement. Washingtonians across the state have demonstrated generosity and compassion. But there is more work to be done to make sure that no one goes hungry due to COVID-19 in our state.
The WA Food Fund was launched last week to help food banks in the area seeing a drop in donations and increase in need. Donations to the fund are being given to three organizations -- Food Lifeline, Northwest Harvest and Second Harvest -- which will then distribute supplies among all food banks across the state. So far, the fund, managed by Philanthropy Northwest, has brought in more than $1 million.
