Inslee eases restrictions on elective surgeries amid pandemic

Gov. Jay Inslee on Wednesday eased restrictions on elective surgeries, leaving it to the discretion of doctors whether to perform certain procedures that were previously banned during the pandemic.

The move is expected to ease the financial burden on hospitals, which are estimated to have lost more than $900 million in revenues since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Last month, the governor restricted such surgeries with the aim of ensuring that hospitals have the capacity to serve a surge of Covid-19 cases and to preserve personal protective equipment (PPE), such as surgical gowns, face masks and face shields, for those on the front lines.

The move temporarily halted procedures such as joint replacements, cataract and lens surgeries, non-urgent cardiac operations and cosmetic procedures.

there are a lot of people out there who have needed surgeries that are considered 'non-essential.'
