Seattle Black Lives Matter to hold 'Black-led Wellness Weekend'

Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County this weekend is putting together health and healing events as part of a "Black-Led Wellness Weekend."

“We have to make sure that we’re taking care of each other, taking time to heal, and ensuring our needs and others’ are met,” BLMSKC’s board of directors said in a statement.

“When we say, ‘Black Lives Matter,’ that includes caring for our physical, mental, emotional and social health. Black-Led Wellness Weekend is a chance for us to reclaim space, in community, specifically to focus on our health. That’s a radical protest in a city that has systematically worked to destroy and forget the Black community and our legacy and commitment to caring for ourselves and each other.”

The organization is working with other community organizations and partners -- such as Public Health Seattle King-County, Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle and Mary’s Place -- to hold a series of health and wellness services on Friday at Seattle Central College. The weekend will also include a "Blackout Healing" events at Judkins Park and Jimi Hendrix Park and a "Taking B(l)ack Pride" event at Jefferson Park to "lift the voices, narratives and contributions of Black queer and trans folks."
