In Tahuya, a state plan to log 176 acres unites activist, neighbors

TAHUYA — On a fern-lined ridge dotted with giant cedars, Joshua Wright bends down and grabs a clump of organic fragments on the forest floor. In his palm are bits of tree needles, fern roots, moss and more.

"When they clear-cut, this will become dust," he says, returning the pile to the ground. "Anything that lives in it will die."

Wright, a 17-year-old climate activist from Union, a town across Hood Canal, is fighting to stop a state logging operation in 176 acres of habitat on the Tahuya Peninsula. He's rallied neighbors and led a petition against the logging that has been signed by more than 1,800 people.

But the Department of Natural Resources, which auctions selections of state lands for logging around Washington each year for the benefit of public schools, colleges and local taxing districts, has already sold the timber in what it's called the Tip Top timber sale. Logging is slated to occur over the next two years.
