Boeing leaders offer clues about what future holds for Everett factory

Boeing is studying multiple options for the future of its Everett factory after the 787 jet assembly moves to South Carolina in mid-2021 and its iconic 747 program shutters in 2022.

“We’re looking at lots of options, and when the timing is right, we’ll certainly share those,” Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of government operations Bill McSherry told participants at a recent Economic Alliance of Snohomish County virtual morning coffee.

McSherry, CEO David Calhoun and Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith were all asked during public events in October about what the future holds for the massive facility at Paine Field.

There were no hard answers, but statements by the three leaders offered insight into the Chicago-based jet maker’s thinking: They won’t be rushed into any rash, short-term decisions, but they won’t let Everett factory space go unused for long. And Boeing is still weighing plans to develop new mid-sized airplanes.

Asked about any plans for a long-discussed New Mid-market Airplane (NMA) being built in Everett, McSherry replied a new jet that’s sized between a 737 Max single-aisle and a 787 Dreamliner might fit that bill.
