Most King County property tax bills are higher due to voter-approved measures

King County has begun sending property tax bills and — spoiler alert — you likely will pay more than last year.

The tax bills for even the owners of some multifamily and commercial properties — many of which have seen rental revenue decline due to Covid-19 — also will be higher. That's because assessments were, by law, made before the pandemic began. Changes in commercial values caused by Covid will be reflected in the 2021 assessed value for taxes payable in 2022.

The King County Assessor's Office did launch an online portal so commercial property owners could inform the county about Covid's impacts to their property values. The office has proposed legislation to the state to help these owners now, Assessor John Wilson said.

Voter approval of special levies plus the strong housing market will generate a 4% increase in King County property tax collections for 2021, although some jurisdictions will see double-digit increases.
