Get outdoors: Washington State Parks offering 4 free access days in June
Washington residents looking to take advantage of the warmer, sunnier days will have plenty of opportunities to get outdoors this month.
Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission has added Juneteenth (June 19) to its schedule of Discover Pass free days this month, making a total of four free access days in June where residents will not have to display a Discover Pass for day-use parking at Washington state parks.
Juneteenth is meant to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States in 1865, marking the date when the Emancipation Proclamation was read aloud to the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas. Despite the fact that President Abraham Lincoln signed the proclamation two years earlier in 1863, slavery continued in Texas until 1865.
In June 2019, Gov. Jay Inslee signed an official proclamation recognizing Juneteenth across the state. This year, the Washington legislature passed a bill making Juneteenth a paid holiday for state workers beginning in 2022.
