Seattle law firm launches initiative backed by large companies to diversify boardrooms

A program with the goal of significantly increasing the number of Black executives on corporate boards launched Wednesday and has been backed by several Seattle-area companies.

“It all starts with the board,” said Bill Malley, Perkins Coie’s managing partner, during the launch.

The Seattle-based law firm is leading the Black Boardroom Initiative. Its backers, including companies like Deloitte, Zillow, F5, Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks and RealNetworks, say they want the program to meet the demand for diversified leadership among the country’s largest public and private companies.

Michael Parham, one of the program's leaders and general counsel for RealNetworks, said there was a lot of talk last year by corporations regarding racial justice — but now, they needed to act on it.
