Los Angeles-based Lotus Communications announced Thursday it is acquiring Sinclair Broadcast Group's Seattle radio stations for about $18 million in cash and other considerations.
The radio stations include News Radio KOMO 1000 AM/97.7 FM, KPLZ "Star" 101.5 FM and Talk Radio KVI 570 AM.
Jim Kalmenson, first senior vice president at Lotus, said he estimates the deal will close sometime in the fourth quarter of 2021, subject to regulatory approval.

Sinclair, based outside Baltimore, has made headlines in recent years for disseminating politically conservative talking points to its local television stations. The company, for example, made local news anchors read scripts condemning "false news" in 2018, much as then President Donald Trump railed against "fake news." An American Political Science Review study from 2019 found stations acquired by Sinclair ran more national and less local news, and its coverage shifted to the political right.
Kalmenson said Lotus doesn't have a political agenda, and it strives to serve the public and local market. The company doesn't plan to make radical changes and will keep the same staff and management.
