Washington's North Cascades Highway closure extended as 3 wildfires burn nearby
Closures on Washington's State Route 20, also known as the North Cascades Highway, are expanding as wildfires continue to burn near Mazama.
The Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced Wednesday that the highway closure is expanding another 5 miles and now stretches from milepost 165 to 177, according the the latest travel alert.
There is no estimated time for reopening, and WSDOT indicated that the closures will likely last through the weekend as crews continue to do prep work in anticipation that the fires will reach the road. The terrain in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is steep and rocky, providing an additional challenge as crews battle the flames.
There is no way around the closure, and the closure points are staffed by emergency crews to turn drivers around. WSDOT recommends travelers use U.S. Route 2 or Interstate 90 for cross-state travel.
