New two-way bike path coming to Seattle's W Green Lake Way N this fall

Although its a relatively small stretch of road, W Green Lake Way N has become a flashpoint for the future of Seattle's car-free "Keep Moving Streets" that opened amid the COVID-19 pandemic to encourage social distancing.

While some residents in the neighborhood started a petition to reopen the road to cars, with many bemoaning longer travel times for those heading east-west, others argued that the stretch of road — which cuts through Green Lake Park and Woodland Park — should remain closed as it provided a safer route for walkers and bikers.

In an attempt to appease both parties, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) announced Wednesday that the road will once again become a two-way street for vehicles and that they will also be adding a two-way bike lane.

"We’re pleased to share that early design shows we have enough street width to accommodate both a 2-way walking and biking path and 2-way vehicle traffic at reduced speeds. We plan to make this change early this fall," SDOT wrote in an update Wednesday. "Beyond returning vehicle traffic lanes to W Green Lake Way N, we’d like to explore creative solutions for making the street less of a divider between Woodland and Green Lake parks."
