Election 2013

Let's take back the state Senate, for starters.

Today, I need your help to ensure the Democrats retake the majority in the Washington State Senate.

I am now the Chair of the Washington Senate Democratic Campaign and we are using the this time before special session to raise funds to fight for Democratic seats in 2013 and 2014. The next four days are critical to our success and you can help in two ways:

Please donate to the Washington State Democratic Campaign at:
https://wasenatedemocrats.fastercampaigns.com/

Our organization is stronger than ever and we need your support in order to recruit and support candidates for the Washington State Senate. Individual donations to the WSDC are not subject to a campaign limit and every dollar will help.

Also, please consider a donation to Senator Nathan Schlicher to help him retain his seat in the 26th Legislative District. He is up against a tea party candidate named Jan Angel and Rob McKenna is determined to get her elected.

Nathan is an incredible candidate and senator and his website is:
http://www.nathanforsenate.org

Whether you can donate $25, $250 or $900 – having you go online and donate in the next four days is important.

Donations must be received by midnight on Sunday, May 12th -- before we enter special session.
Thank you for your help!

Sharon K. Nelson
Senator, 34th LD

2. Whatcom Democrats Launch Coordinated Campaign for County Council
Tue Jul 9, 2013, 12:29 AM
Jul 2013

The Whatcom County Democrats is launching a coordinated campaign to elect leaders to the Whatcom County Council who will protect the county's drinking water, ensure the viability of our farm and fishing economy, and work for family-wage jobs for county citizens. The campaign will support incumbents Carl Weimer (District 3) and Ken Mann (District 2), and challengers Barry Buchanan (District 1) and Rud Browne (At-Large).

LIKE the FACEBOOK PAGE
This election is a priority. The County Council has a responsibility to work with the City of Bellingham to protect the drinking water for half the people in the county. Despite this clear need and legal requirement, the majority on the County Council continues to drag their feet. Without leadership, Lake Whatcom will continue to degrade and water drinkers will pay substantially more in years to come.

Responsible planning makes good financial sense for families and for county government. That’s why many are puzzled that incumbents Kathy Kershner and Bill Knutzen continue to fund out-of-town attorneys to prolong a minor planning issue. They’ve spent more than $140,000 fighting compliance with a law that’s been on the books since 1990. It’s time to sit down and talk with people, figure out how to follow the law, and move forward. In addition to paying the legal fees, the county is missing out on important state and federal grants because we’re not following the law.

The Whatcom County Council holds one of the few votes or decisions on the proposed coal export terminal at Cherry Point. If built, this will be the largest coal export terminal in North America. While promising economic benefit to the county, it will also cause environmental and economic harm, including unmitigatable harm to cultural values and treaty rights of local tribes.

"We need critical thinkers on the County Council who will gather all the information they need and look at all the facts before voting. It's important that our decision-makers understand the scientific method and the real danger and costs of a degraded drinking water reservoir, the long-term costs of subdividing farmland and the impacts of climate change to all of us," said Mike Estes, Chair of the Whatcom Democrats.

A campaign office has been established on the main floor of the Herald Building in downtown Bellingham where the four candidates' campaigns will be based. A Campaign Director has been hired to coordinate voter contact efforts. The office can be reached at 360-220-7828, and online at whatcomwins.com.

CAMPAIGN OFFICE OPEN HOUSE
Thursday, July 11th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm

This is an opportunity to meet the four County Council candidates
endorsed by the Whatcom Democrats,
meet the campaign staff of the Whatcom Wins! 2013 Campaign and

This local county election has already garnered national press, including MSNBC and the National Journal, and in the works is coverage by the Toronto Star and a Showtime documentary.

Because of the national and international impacts of a coal export terminal, there has been speculation and concern about the potential for a lot of outside money coming into Whatcom County to influence these races.

"Out-of-state corporations can buy a lot of annoying TV ads, as we've seen in past elections, but in a local election like this, it will be boots on the ground that will make the difference. Our money and time will go to organize local folks to get the message out, neighbor to neighbor," Estes said.

34. Yes, there is a corporate conspiracy to attack public education
Mon Oct 28, 2013, 04:24 AM
Oct 2013
https://seattleducation2010.wordpress.com/2013/10/27/lisa-macfarland-of-wa-dfer-and-her-conspiracy-theories/

Lisa Macfarlane, Director of Democrats for Education Reform (DFER) for Washington State, who received a $10,000 grant from the Walton’s as an “Education Reformer to Watch” for her work on pushing charter school initiative 1240 in the state of Washington and former Director of External Affairs with the League of Education Voters (LEV), just sent out an e-mail regarding the Seattle school board race.

In this e-mail, Ms. Macfarlane said that Sue Peters’ was a conspiracy theorist because of the connections that Sue and I made a few years back between Bill Gates and Eli Broad and their agenda regarding public education that was described in our post The Lines of Influence in Education Reform.

Funny thing is, Ms. Macfarlane is probably the only person in the US and beyond who thinks that the relationship between Gates, the Walton’s, members of ALEC and Eli Broad, et al, and the privatization push is some kind of theory and nothing more. It’s ironic that the same person who is living off of corporate money is the only individual so far that’s saying it’s all just some big story that the rest of us have made up.

6. FUSE phonebank for Nathan Schlicher--do it from home if you like
Fri Jul 26, 2013, 05:47 AM
Jul 2013

The path to retaking the Senate runs through Kitsap County this November.

With the Senate divided by only a single vote, we can't lose another seat. We must defend Sen. Nathan Schlicher and defeat his far–right challenger, Rep. Jan Angel.

We've seen Angel's priorities in the state House over the last five years and they aren't pretty. She co–sponsored a bill to ban all abortion, even in cases of rape and incest.1 She voted to block important health insurance reforms that expand access to mammograms, birth control, and health coverage for kids.2 And Angel is the state chair of ALEC, the infamous right wing front group that turns bills sponsored by corporations into laws.3

We're organizing statewide phonebanks to defeat Angel and keep her disastrous priorities out of the Senate–all from the comfort of your couch. All you need is a phone and a computer to call 26th district voters from home.

Fuse members from Port Angeles to Pasco are coming together on Thursday, August 1 from 5:30–8 pm for a statewide phonebank. We'll give you all the training and materials you need to educate progressive voters who still haven't voted. Click below to sign up:

http://fusewa.me/Aug1Phonebank

Thanks to Senate Republicans, we just finished one of the most dysfunctional legislative sessions in history. After 153 days and two special sessions, Rodney Tom's Senate Republicans refused to compromise on common–sense bills to protect women's health, support immigrant students, and close tax loopholes.

Adding a far–right Republican like Jan Angel won't make Senate better – it will just worsen the gridlock caused by conservative ideologues.

If we're going to protect women's health, fund our kids' schools, and keep hard–line Republicans like Jan Angel out of the Senate, we need everyone working together to educate voters in the 26th district.

Join Fuse members on Thursday August 1 from 5:30–8 pm for our statewide phonebank day. We'll give you all the training and materials you need to educate progressive voters who still haven't voted. Click below to sign up:

http://fusewa.me/Aug1Phonebank

Thanks for all that you do,

Erin and the entire team at Fuse

She voted against everything from banning toxic chemicals from children’s toys to cleaning up Puget Sound!

That’s why Washington Conservation Voters is doing everything we can to elect a proven environmental champion, Senator Nathan Schlicher. This is the only legislative race on the ballot this year and has huge statewide implications in building back an environmental majority - we need your help.

7. Matt Ready for Hospital Commissioner
Sun Sep 1, 2013, 06:48 AM
Sep 2013

Hope you've enjoyed your summer! My campaign for hospital commissioner has been endorsed by Wa State Representative Sherry Appleton (sponsor of HB1085 Washington State Health Insurance Security Trust), please check this out: http://readyforhealthcare.org/?p=142

I successfully smoked out my opponent and made him reveal his true feelings about single payer healthcare. He is opposed to single payer for many of the common misguided reasons. He believes a profit driven healthcare system spurs innovation, etc...

As you may remember, I am running against an MD, so it could really help my campaign to have some endorsements from other MD's- like yourself. If you are interested here are 3 things that you could do to help!

Would you be willing to write an endorsement letter to the editor of one of our local papers?

Advocates of single payer Healthcare reform, it is time to act. You can help energize a new grass roots strategy for educating and mobilizing voters to understand and support single payer healthcare.

Our healthcare payment system is broken. Many people are suffering without adequate financial access to healthcare due to lack of insurance and underinsurance. One in seven residents of Jefferson county did not seek medical attention in the last 12 months due to cost barriers. Our healthcare system wastes billions of dollars in our current multi-payer system, sending billions of unnecessary profits to insurance and pharmaceutical corporations. The clear solution and obvious foundation to a sustainable healthcare system for all people is single payer healthcare. Matt Ready, a vocal advocate for single payer healthcare, is running for Hospital Commissioner of the East Jefferson County Public Hospital District in Washington State and his campaign needs your help.

Matt’s opponent, the incumbent, never had to reveal his true position on single payer healthcare until this campaign. Matt believes hospital commissioners must be advocates
of all our healthcare concerns and that includes the big issues and big problems in our healthcare system. In his campaign, Matt strongly advocates and discusses single payer healthcare and it has forced his opponent, after five years in office, to finally reveal his opposition to single payer. Matt’s opponent and current hospital commissioner is strongly opposed to single payer healthcare. He writes on his blog:

"My opponent [Matt Ready], if elected, says he will use his position as a Health Care Commissioner to lobby for a single payer healthcare system. He claims that, “single payer healthcare is the only way to make healthcare accessible to everyone.” … Using the Commissioner position in this way is impractical and potentially destructive to Jefferson Healthcare. His claim that a single payer system is the only way to make health care accessible to all is simply wrong … Single payer health care may sound great, but such a system makes the healthcare industry a monopoly. Monopoly status lessens incentives for quality, service (access) and innovation."
You can read his full blog post at this link:
http://www.marcmauney.com/blog/?p=33

As many advocates of single payer must constantly point out, a free market profit-driven healthcare system has been tried in the U.S. and it has failed us. We pay twice as much per capita as other single payer countries, we get worse outcomes, and have less access. Nonetheless, Matt’s opponent has bought into the free market healthcare ideology.

This local hospital commissioner race is an important new front in state and national campaigns for single payer healthcare. If Matt wins, the first thing he will do is ask our hospital district board to endorse single payer healthcare and call on other hospital boards to do the same. He will strongly push for our state and federal representatives to join the single payer movement. He will push for the Washington State Hospital Association and the American Hospital Association to endorse single payer. He will encourage all district doctors, nurses, and all healthcare professionals to become educated about the benefits of single payer. His goal is to help spark a growth of learning and single payer advocacy across all the public hospital districts in Washington State, and believes we might be able to get Washington State House Bill 1085, Healthcare for all Washington, finally out of committee and onto the floor for a genuine debate.

In 2017, the Affordable Care Act will enable states to enact a single payer healthcare plan. If we act now, spread education by making as many public hospital district commissioner races talk about single payer healthcare, we might join Vermont in being one of the first states to get true single payer healthcare reform. It starts with our local commissioner races right here and now.

If you are an advocate for single payer healthcare, you can help. Matt’s campaign needs intelligent thoughtful letters to the editor at our two local newspapers: The Port Townsend Leader (http://www.ptleader.com/) and The Peninsula Daily News (http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/). Please write your informed critique of Matt’s opponent’s views on single payer and express your support for Matt’s campaign.

If you do write a letter, please cc the letter to Matt’s campaign at readyforhealthcare@gmail.com. That way the campaign can print the letters on our website, even if they do not get published.

If you are interested in supporting Matt’s campaign with a financial donation, you can also do that at his campaign website: http://readyforhealthcare.org

If you would like to hst a meet-and-greet in your neighborhood, have a yard sign dropped off, or just talk to Matt about the issues in this campaign, please contact him through the campaign website. You can also call him directly at: 360-477-1447.

Finally, please forward this letter to anyone you know who cares about single payer healthcare reform.

Let me know what you think!

8. Yes on Prop 1 to fix Tacoma streets
Wed Sep 4, 2013, 03:04 AM
Sep 2013
http://www.thepierceprogressive.org/tacomastreetsprop1

Everyone who lives in Tacoma knows that our City has been too strapped in recent years to do a good job maintaining our streets. Now, the Tacoma City Council has a proposal to try to solve this problem with funding designed to be not just a one-time fix, but a sustainable source of revenue for the long term. Tacoma voters can decide whether this plan goes forward or not by voting for or against Proposition 1 on their November ballot. In a nutshell, if Proposition 1 passes, it would add 2 percent to the taxes paid by each of the three utility companies (natural gas, electric, and phone). Those additional revenues would be dedicated to the maintenance and improvement of our streets and would add nearly $11 million to the $48 million currently earmarked for streets – that’s a 22 percent increase. This proposition would bring the three utility companies’ taxes to 8 percent, which matches what all the other utility companies (waste water, surface water, solid waste, water, rail, and cable TV/Click!) are already paying.

City council members and other officials have begun a series of helpful information sessions in many locations around the city. Check for the one that suits you best.

16. Warning – Tidal wave of coal export money about to hit Whatcom County election
Thu Sep 19, 2013, 04:58 AM
Sep 2013
http://voteweimer.com/

Normally, local elections are best left to the local citizens who will be affected by the outcome. But this year, in Whatcom County, there is an Obscure County Election That Could Change the Planet. This election may very well decide the fate of the largest proposed coal export terminal in North America, and will certainly affect many more people than just the voters of Whatcom County.

Most political analysts who have looked at this race believe there will soon be a tidal wave of outside money flooding Whatcom County in an attempt to put in place candidates who will make the coal port permit decision based on money and politics instead of facts and science. Even though you cannot vote in the Whatcom County election, you can play an important role in helping counter this tidal wave of money that threatens our region.

That is why I have made the extraordinary decision to reach out to people outside of my own jurisdiction for support. By donating to my campaign you can help ensure that this crucial decision will be made by an elected official who pledges to make the decision based on the best science regarding climate change, ocean acidification, rail traffic and health impacts.

I am strongly endorsed by the Washington Conservation Voters and the Sierra Club. And recently Fuse of Washington, one of the largest progressive organizations in the state, declared in their endorsement of me that this race is “too close to call.” They went on to explain:

"Whatcom County is almost always a key battle ground between progressives and conservatives across a range of issues, particularly the environment. The stakes this year are higher than ever.

The seven-member Whatcom County Council has an important role in the outcome of a proposed coal export facility in Bellingham. Peabody Energy, the world’s largest private coal company, is aiming to ship tens of millions of tons of Rocky Mountain coal to China. The proposed coal terminal would facilitate a fuller build-out of coal power in China, with devastating consequences for global warming.

Carl Weimer has been a consistent environmental leader on the Whatcom County Council for the past eight years. He has been a powerful advocate for smart land use, clean water, and a full scoping of the proposed Cherry Point coal terminal. In addition to his work on the Council, he works as Executive Director of the National Pipeline Safety Trust and serves on several committees devoted to environmental protection. His opponent, Michelle Luke, describes herself as “right of center” and narrowly lost to Weimer (by 835 votes) in 2009."

I know it is out of the ordinary to be asked to support a candidate in an election that you cannot even vote in, but this is no ordinary election and the outcome will affect you.

If you, like I, are concerned about the potential impacts of endless coal trains, and care deeply about Puget Sound and the environment we will leave our children and grandchildren, then I hope you will donate as generously as you can to my campaign (individual limit $900 or $1800 from couples). You can use your credit card on my website’s donation page or can send a check to: Weimer for Whatcom County, 1055 W. Laurel Rd., Ferndale, WA 98248.

I would be honored to have your support! Together, we can turn back the tide of outside money. Please don’t sit this one out. Every dollar will count.

Big coal violates law to elect Republicans
Whatcom County citizens call on Attorney General and PDC to act immediately

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:

Mike Estes, 360-220-1100
Lisa McShane, 360-201-0779

BELLINGHAM – Groups supporting the proposed coal terminal at Cherry Point have set up political committees to deliberately hide $154,000 from the public and in doing so, violated state law at least 12 times.

The political committees, which share the same treasurer, Orphalee Smith, CPA, of Bellingham, are set up in a way to illegally impact local elections in Whatcom County.

With critical races in the balance, community leaders in Whatcom County are calling on the Washington State Attorney General to step in and make Saving Whatcom PAC and their big coal donors comply with the laws of Washington.

Washington state law requires the five largest donors to an advertisement to be printed on a piece of mail or television advertisement. They have set up two committees and transferred money between them, in an attempt to hide donor names from the public.

“We always knew the SSA Marine and the big coal companies would do whatever it took to win this election, but these are flagrant violations of the law,” said Mike Estes, chair of Whatcom Democrats. “Big coal clearly believes they can buy a local election in Whatcom County and just deal with the legal details later.”

“I’m not surprised that they’re trying to buy the election,” said Lisa McShane, the co-chair of Whatcom Wins, the coordinated campaign working to elect Democrats to the county council and defeat the tea party Republican slate. “But the truth is, this is a local election and we’ve got hundreds of volunteers talking to voters. I think on election day they’ll see that people are more powerful than coal money.”

The coal companies are supporting the four Republican candidates, Bill Knutzen, Kathy Kershner, Michele Luke and Ben Elenbaas.

Background on the top 5 donors

SSA Marine - $12,000
SSA Marine is the applicant for North America’s largest coal export terminal. They have applied for permits to build this north of Bellingham, at Cherry Point. The Whatcom County Council is a local 7-member body with a yes or no vote on the terminal.

Corby and Barbara Robertson of Quintana Minerals - $32,000
Corby Robertson of Quintana Minerals has significant investment in coal. In 2003 Forbes wrote that “Robertson sits atop the largest private hoard in the nation – 21-billion tons of reserves he has quietly amassed over three decades.”
http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2003/0120/060.html

Quintana Minerals had $286,650 in donations in 2012 alone. $12,500 to Ted Cruz and $12,500 to John Boehner was a small part of their giving
http://www.opensecrets.org/orgs/summary.php?id=D000036912

Corbin Robertson Chair of Quintana donated $50,800 to Boehner for Speaker Committee and Barbara Robertson chipped in $11,000.
http://data.influenceexplorer.com/contributions/#b3JnYW5pemF0aW9uX2Z0PVF...

Kevin Cramer, a State Commissioner in North Dakota charged with mine permits received $9,800 in 2011. He is now a US Congressman
http://bismarcktribune.com/news/opinion/mailbag/questions-about-campaign...

Cloud Peak Energy - $50,000
Cloud Peak is the fourth largest coal producer in the US and donated $50,000 to the Whatcom County Council focused PAC. That’s a large donation for them. In 2012 Cloud Peak Energy donated just $32,240 total.

Just last week Cloud Peak stepped up their activity in getting permits for GPT, according to the Sheridan Press. This was at a Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce meeting where they also discussed their relationship with the Alliance for Northwest Jobs.

http://thesheridanpress.com/?p=13046

Global Coal Sales - $50,000
Global coal sales of Columbus appears to be a small company that markets coal for larger partners. According to corporate information available online, their annual revenues are around $500,000. Donating 1/10 of their revenue to elect Republicans in a Whatcom County Council race seems like an unusual allocation of funds.

18. Diane Ravitch supports Seattle School Board candidate Sue Peters

Seattle School Board Candidate Sue Peters Supported by Education Expert Diane Ravitch

Seattle School Board candidate Sue Peters

A national spotlight has been cast on the Seattle School Board race this year as candidate Sue Peters wins the support of former U.S. Undersecretary of Education, Dr. Diane Ravitch.

The local parent and education journalist has also been endorsed by Ravitch’s national organization, the Network for Public Education. “Help elect Sue Peters to Seattle School Board, a champion of public education,” Ravitch tweeted to her thousands of supporters.

Ravitch, an historian and professor at New York University, served in the Department of Education in both the Bush I and the Clinton Administrations. She has since become a foremost national authority on public education and a powerful critic of controversial “corporate ed reform” policies that emphasize charter schools, high-stakes testing and teacher evaluations based on standardized test scores.

Ravitch is currently touring the country with her new book, Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America’s Public Schools (Knopf, 2013) and will speak in Seattle this Thursday, Sept. 26, 7 p.m., at Kane Hall, Room 130, University of Washington. This event is free.

Her previous book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education (Basic Books, 2011) was a widely acclaimed bestseller.

“Help elect Sue Peters to Seattle School Board, a champion of public education.” — Diane Ravitch

“I am thrilled and honored to have Dr. Ravitch’s support,“ says Peters. “I greatly respect the years of experience and research Dr. Ravitch has dedicated to public education, and I have drawn many of the same conclusions she has. Privatizing public education via charter schools, excessive testing, and blaming teachers are failed policies that have done great damage to our schools and the morale of our students and teachers.”

“Instead, I support an investment in rich, engaging curriculum for all students, not excessive testing; respect and support for teachers, and keeping public education public.”

Peters is a professionally trained journalist with a Master’s degree in Communication from Stanford University. She has researched and written about local and national public education policy and practices for the past five years, for the Huffington Post, the Seattle Education Blog and elsewhere.

Peters is also a founding member of Parents Across America (PAA). In Feb. 2011, she served on a panel with Ravitch at the organization’s kickoff event in New York. In the fall of 2010, Peters emceed a forum at Seattle University featuring Ravitch via Skype.

A parent of two who attend Seattle Public Schools, Peters had a strong showing in the August primary election, finishing with 43 percent of the vote in a three-way race. Her grassroots campaign has earned a wide range of progressive and community endorsements, and now national attention.

When supporters of Peters’ well-funded opponent launched negative attacks during the primary, Ravitch covered the story on her widely read blog: Seattle: Status Quo Crowd Fears Sue Peters.

“Sue Peters is an experienced journalist and parent leader who is running for Seattle school board. I have blogged about Sue because I have met her and I know how committed she is to strengthening the public schools of Seattle and standing up to the powerful corporate raiders.

These corporate forces, the ones who wield great power in Seattle, do not want her elected to the school board. They fear her brave and honest voice.”— Diane Ravitch

PSARA is supporting the Good Jobs in SeaTac Initiative that would help some 6000 SeaTac workers who are locked into poverty wages while the large corporations operating in and around our airport thrive. The initiative would require a minimum wage of $15 per hour, ensures access to paid sick leave and greater opportunity for full time work. Small businesses inside and outside the airport are specifically exempt.

We have been asked to provide volunteers who will phone bank seniors who live in SeaTac. Phone bankers will be asking these seniors to support the initiative. You can volunteer for any and all of the days of phone banking listed above.

32. Seeking some balance in disparity city
Fri Oct 25, 2013, 05:39 AM
Oct 2013

http://www.eoionline.org/blog/seeking-some-balance-in-disparity-city/

Those flying enjoy substantially better incomes than the people on whom they depend for service. Almost half of all passengers have incomes exceeding $80,000; two-fifths have incomes over $90,000; and over one-third have incomes over $100,000. You can tell they have money to spend when 20,000 copies of “Fifty Shades of Grey” were bought in Sea-Tac bookstores last year — plus 90,000 neck pillows … which, by the way, I always found useless after I bought them!

The workers at the airport are paid a wage that puts them right on the brink of poverty. They can’t use a paid sick day if they get sick or if their children get sick and need their parents’ TLC. They can’t take a day off of work without fear of losing their job — even if they are trying to flee an abusive partner.

Right now, the economic rules we’ve written as a society consign workers at the airport to subservience. The message of those rules is clear: your work isn’t respected, and neither are you. You exist to serve, and you are expected to make sure that travelers’ needs for comfort and safety are met — whether that be providing food, magazines, or a massage, getting our baggage, or fueling the planes.

So the citizens of SeaTac have called the question by putting Proposition 1 on the city’s ballot: If the typical airport passenger has an income of $80,000, how about the typical airport worker having an income of $31,000? Proposition 1 would make that happen, by raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour.

How about a sense of respect so that a worker can get a paid sick day when she is ill, instead of muddling through a shift at Anthony’s in the airport or the nearby Cedarbrook Lodge and being a human vector for disease? Proposition 1 would do that creating a workplace standard for paid sick days.

It is that simple: change the rules of our economy, and you change the results. Under Proposition 1, we might begin to see one airport in SeaTac, a city of workers, passengers, and managers who all have a sense of hope, of opportunity, of security, of being Americans together. Sea-Tac Airport can start to be a place that truly resonates with liberty and justice for all … as Ben Franklin would have expected.

35. Donate to SeaTac Proposition 1
Wed Oct 30, 2013, 03:29 AM
Oct 2013
Support the SeaTac economy by voting Yes on Prop 1 by Tuesday, November 5. Here's why:

- Puts Our Health and Safety First: Right now, many employees working in and around our airport must make a choice go to work sick, or lose their pay. Prop 1 provides up to 5 days of paid sick leave for fulltime airport employees, preventing the spread of dangerous disease and keeping our families and community safe. (Proposition 1, Section 7.45.020)

- Creates Full-Time Job Incentives: Right now, many of the big overseas and multinational corporations working at the airport are gaming the system, providing more part-time jobs with low pay we can’t live on. Prop 1 incentivizes airport-related businesses to employ full time workers, creating jobs our neighbors can count on to make ends meet. (Proposition 1, Section 7.45.030)

- Ensures Tip Fairness: Right now, many hotels and restaurants in SeaTac pocket the tips and service charges that many guests and customers believe go to their servers. Prop 1 requires SeaTac hotels and hotel restaurants to do the right thing and give tips and service charges to the employees who perform the actual services. (Proposition 1, Section 7.45.040)

- Boosts SeaTac’s Economy by allowing more of our family, neighbors and friends to buy locally: Prop 1 ensures that SeaTac residents employed at and around the airport can receive a living wage of $15 helping them make ends meet. Because thousands of local employees will now have more money to buy locally, it’s estimated that Proposition 1 will create 412 new jobs , with millions of additional dollars pumped into SeaTac’s struggling economy.

30. A word from a Bellevue progressive on the city council elections.
Sun Oct 20, 2013, 03:06 AM
Oct 2013

The General Election ballots have been mailed. If you are like me, you vote before the "mud-slinging" of the last couple of weeks gets into full volume. It invariably is not full of truths! The false robo calls and mailings from the Wallace campaign have already started.

I recommend two very qualified candidates. First for Position 6 on the Bellevue City Council....Lynne Robinson. Second, for Position 4 on the Bellevue City Council....Steve Kasner.

Many of us, including Lynne and Steve have worked for decades doing community service to help develop both the City of Bellevue and Bellevue School District to be among the best in the United States.

For the last 4 years our Council has been very acrimonious! and not focused on the needs of all of the people who live in Bellevue. Too much time has been spent on conflicts of interest, transit in the downtown and on maximizing the Downtown as a profit center, while ignoring the needs of the rest of Bellevue. This self dealing and acrimony has already wasted a million dollars of taxpayer money. This must stop! Help eliminate the self dealing, gamesmanship and sleaze. VOTE to make positive change on the City Council.

Lynne Robinson knows Bellevue, its people, its local government policies and operations, and the broad scope of issues facing our city beyond the Downtown! She has lived and run a business in Bellevue for more than two(2) decades. She is highly qualified, having served as the Chair of the Parks and Community Services Board, and The Bellevue Network on Aging and is a small business owner who understands the issues facing 80% of the businesses in Bellevue--our small businesses! She has been active in the Woodridge community, and in Bellevue schools. In other words, unlike her opponent, she is ready from day one to provide non-partisan leadership on the City Council because she knows Bellevue and its residents and is not aligned with any faction of the current Council.

Her website is allinforlynne.com

Steve Kasner also knows Bellevue, its people, it's local government policies and operations, and the broad scope of issues facing our city. He has lived in and been active in Bellevue for nearly four (4) decades. He is highly qualified, having served on the Parks and Community Services Board, and East Bellevue Community Council(current chair) and in many other capacities. He has a Master in Teaching(SPU), a law degree(JD-Seattle U) a BA in business from UofW and is a graduate of the community training program Advance Bellevue. He is bright, engaging, can be very funny, and is very knowledgeable about our City and understands the issues facing the residents and smaller businesses in Bellevue.

In other words, he is well prepared to provide leadership and a calming influence on City Council. He has a track record of being open, fair, and getting things done in a thoughtful engaging manner. He would be a breath of fresh air on the City Council.

His website is stevekasner.org

Please share my email with your friends, neighbors and others who care about Bellevue. We are doing our best to continually improve our community and all Bellevue citizens need a high quality, conflict and sleaze free, City Council.

Chuck Kimbrough

Past member of Bellevue Park Board, Planning Commission and Co-chair of several campaign's including the 1988 Bellevue Park Bond Campaign.

Bellevue citizen 50+ years.
