State finalizes toll rate increases for Seattle's 520 bridge, SR 99 tunnel and Tacoma Narrows Bridge

Despite large public opposition, drivers in Seattle and Tacoma will be paying more in tolls to use key routes starting this fall.

After months of of deliberation, the Washington State Transportation Commission unanimously finalized toll rate increases on Tuesday for the state Route 520 bridge, state Route 99 tunnel and Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Last year, transportation officials warned lawmakers that increases were likely to make up for a $72 million shortfall in revenue brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. After reviewing multiple options for the increases earlier in the spring, from across-the-board hikes to tailored increases during peak traffic hours, the commission voted on the preferred option earlier in July and put the plans out for public comment.

Approximately 26,000 members of the public responded to the commission's plans. Analysts noted that the increases were largely unpopular during public outreach, but ultimately were necessary given the revenue shortfalls.
