After slow start, King County ramps up rent relief payments

After a slow start, King County said it has sped up payments for households qualifying for its rent assistance program.

The $145 million King County program launched in May, but by mid-August it had paid out only $6.5 million for 800 households — or 4.5% of the federal relief funding available.

But last week the program paid out $7.7 million, the highest weekly amount distributed so far. In all, the county has paid $46.3 million to cover rents for 4,656 tenants.

Based on these numbers, the county has now distributed nearly a third of its federal relief fund dollars set aside for rent assistance. There are currently 14,172 tenants with applications in process.
