Carpenters end strike after approving new contract

The fifth time was the charm for the Northwest Carpenters Union, whose members have voted to accept a contract negotiated with the Associated General Contractors of Washington.

The results were announced Monday, four days after voting had begun. Over 5,300 members cast ballots, with 53.65% approving the contract, the fifth offered.

It was a drawn-out withholding of labor at sites across the region, including high-profile projects for Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp., Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google.

Under the new three-year contract, the total increase in wages and benefits is $10.02 a hour, a 15.4% increase, according to the union. Wages will be paid retroactively to June 1 to members working certain jobs. The old contract wage was $46.92 per hour, plus benefits.
