1 killed, 5 survive after avalanche at Crystal Mountain, sheriff's office says
The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said one person was killed and five others survived after an avalanche occurred Saturday morning at Crystal Mountain, which had been buffeted by hurricane-force winds as a powerful winter storm moved through Western Washington.
Ski patrol were called to 33914 Crystal Mountain Blvd. shortly before 11 a.m. after a witness saw a group of six skiers who were consumed by falling snow.
Sgt. Darren Moss, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said in a written statement that everyone in the group was wearing homing beacons. He said they were able to extricate themselves from the snow and were told to go downhill in case another avalanche occurred in the area.
One victim who was not breathing after being pulled from the snow was pronounced dead. The identity of the victim was pending.
