Hottest weather of the summer coming next week as heat wave approaches
The Stayman Flats Fire located 5 miles southwest of Chelan has burned 1,200 acres of grass and brush. Fortunately, direct fire suppression from multiple crews working in difficult terrain on the ground and in the air have contained 80 percent of the fire.
Oftentimes, wildfires and heat go hand in hand. I fear more fires could pop, primarily east of the Cascades, as 100-plus-degree heat parches the landscape across the Columbia Basin next week.
For Western Washington, the fire season has been suppressed this month due to the lingering effects from our cool, wet spring. But we're now amid the driest time of the year with the hottest weather yet this summer soon to come.
Tuesday through Thursday of next week, Puget Sound will be sweating in 90-degree heat. During the three-day heat wave, record highs and also record maximum low temperatures could be broken.
