Report shows Washington still adding jobs even as possible recession looms

Washington state added jobs last month, but hiring is showing signs of slowing.

The state gained an estimated net total of 2,500 jobs in June, according to a new monthly report from the Employment Security Department. The Seattle metropolitan area, which includes Everett and Bellevue, led the way with 3,300 additional jobs last month, while many other areas of the state lost jobs.

Overall, the modest gain continues a trend in which fewer jobs are being added after steady hiring growth throughout 2021. During the first six months of 2021 the state added 85,000 jobs, compared with 58,900 over the same period in 2022, according to the report.

“Efforts underway to curb high inflation — such as raising interest rates — will likely continue to dampen job growth and hiring as the year progresses," ESD's state economist, Paul Turek, said in a news release.
