Seattle City Council weighs permanent cap on food delivery fees

The Seattle City Council is considering a permanent cap on how much services like Uber Eats, DoorDash and Grubhub can charge restaurants to deliver their food.

When Seattle's then-Mayor Jenny Durkan issued the city's civil emergency order at the outset of the pandemic in April 2020, she included a provision that limited third-party food delivery commissions to 15% of a total order.

On Wednesday, the council's economic development committee advanced a measure to make that cap permanent, led by Councilmembers Alex Pedersen and Dan Strauss.

If approved, the measure would keep the limit on commissions to 15%. Before the cap, restaurants paid as much as 30%.
