Washington State Ferries, Kitsap Transit awarded funding through infrastructure package

Washington State Ferries has been awarded a $38 million distribution in funding through the Federal Highway Administration.

The distribution is the first major release of funding through the FHWA's Ferry Boat Program since the passage of the federal infrastructure package last year, WSF spokesman Ian Sterling said in an email to the Kitsap Sun. The agency relies heavily on the program's funding to support vessel and ferry terminal work, he said.

Statewide, ferry operators – including Kitsap Transit – have been awarded $42 million in funding through the program, according to 2022 allocations announced by the FHWA last week. Kitsap Transit was awarded about $855,000 in funding.

“This $42.4 million from the Infrastructure Law will help Washington state maintain our world-class ferry fleet,” Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., said in a statement touting the money. “Over 17 million Washingtonians depend on timely and reliable ferry service annually. This funding will ensure that Washington residents and visitors will be able to stay connected to their families, their jobs, and the greater Puget Sound.”
