U.S. 12 reopens over White Pass, Packwood evacuation levels reduced

Sep. 12—Both U.S. 12 and State Route 123 in Lewis County reopened about 7 p.m. Sunday following a more than two-day closure due to the Goat Rocks Wilderness fire.

The Washington state Department of Transportation warns that the fire remains active and travelers through the area should expect smoky conditions, be alert for emergency personnel, and be prepared for the possibility that it will again be shut down.

About 20 miles of U.S. 12 has been closed up to the White Pass summit since 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, because of the spreading wildfire, smoke, and windy conditions.

Forest Service Roads FSR46, FSR4610, FSR4612, FSR1266, FSR1260 and all associated spurs remain closed, as does La Wis Wis Campground.
