Microsoft is laying off 10,000 workers amid tech downturn

The layoffs will affect nearly 5% of Microsoft's global workforce, the company said.

"As we saw customers accelerate their digital spend during the pandemic, we’re now seeing them optimize their digital spend to do more with less," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a memo to employees on Wednesday.

"We’re also seeing organizations in every industry and geography exercise caution as some parts of the world are in a recession and other parts are anticipating one," he added.

The company said the job cuts, changes to its hardware portfolio and consolidation of its real estate holdings would result in a $1.2 billion charge.

I left msft last fall for a different company. I had been working on one of the groups hard hit by these layoffs.

Close to 900 Seattle-area employees of Microsoft will be laid off in March, according to a notice posted Wednesday by the Washington state Employment Security Department.

Driving the news: Among the 10,000 company-wide layoffs announced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on Wednesday, 878 will affect workers based in Redmond, Bellevue and Issaquah, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification.

The layoffs, listed as permanent, will go into effect on March 20.

As of 2022, Microsoft reported it had 221,000 employees with 122,000 of them working in the U.S.
