Workers returning to downtown Seattle offices could help deter crime, experts say

The Seattle Police Department recorded 49,883 criminal offenses in 2022, an all-time high for the city.

So, when Washington's largest employer, Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN), announced it would be calling employees back to the office in May, Mayor Bruce Harrell lauded the plan but also saw the challenge.

"I embrace the proposition that we must make it safe for them as more employees return," Harrell said during his State of the City address in February.

While the high crime rate has been a major concern for employees and businesses alike, experts say the return of workers could help curb criminal activities. Conversely, when remote working took off during the pandemic, the crime rate in Seattle climbed.
