Seattle steam plant operator CenTrio shares early details of decarbonization effort

CenTrio, the owner/operator of the waterfront steam plant that heats around 165 buildings in downtown Seattle and First Hill, on Wednesday gave an early glimpse of its decarbonization plan.

The 130-year-old district energy system's gas-fired boilers in the waterfront plant will be replaced with hydrogen and electric boilers, steam heat pumps, a giant heat battery and other technologies, like carbon capture.

Also in the works is one or more new energy-generating stations on First Hill, where CenTrio heats three major medical facilities. The company is exploring incorporation of chilled water into a future First Hill station.

CenTrio announced a new partnership with global engineering company WSP's Seattle office, which will engineer the decarbonization plan and build on the preliminary planning work done over the last year by Energy & Water Development LLC of Seattle.
